Summer bike camps> Extreme bike camps> Mountain bike camps> Summer bike tours>Bicycle History> Summer bike camps are a great getaway. Extreme bike camps and mountain bike camps rank high in popularity but teen cycling takes on a larger dimension with summer bike tours. The Student Hosteling Program brings the cycling experience of teens and students to a new heights and depths with their popular teen bike tours. There are US bike tours, Canadian bike tours, and European bike tours to choose from. Teen bike tours offer what no summer bike camps can provide, a sense of the world's grandeur. The bicycle is itself is a grand and multinational product. Beginning in Germany, it reappeared in France, onto England, and finally to the USA before its development was complete. Here's a little bicycle history to note the stages. |

In 1888 when John Boyd Dunlop invented the pneumatic tire. This became extremely popular because it significantly smoothed out the ride of the bicycle and allowed greater speeds. Because of this cyclists could more comfortably cycle greater distances. Within four years of its creation, the pneumatic tire became standard on all bikes. In the 1890's two and three speed internal gear hubs became popular. This type of internal hub is still in use today on many bicycles. In 1899, the external gear system or derailleur system came into being. This involved a lever which pulled a cable connected to a derailleur that pulled the chain onto a variety of gears just like the bikes of today! (c) Copyright 2001 www.bicycletrips.com |
