“I went for one reason: sightseeing. When it was time to come home there were eleven reasons to stay: my friends. Words can not describe the trip I had when I signed up with SHP. The experience was beyond comprehension, beyond imagination, and even beyond recollection. I can remember highlights, of course, some things are just too incredible to forget. But it’s really the little things that count - a sardonic comment made over dry Grape-nuts that leaves you giggling for the rest of the day, or a laugh shared when you fall on your tush and thank god only one person saw it. These are the things that are so easily forgettable, yet make a trip not just great but unfathomable. These are the experiences I had with SHP. When I signed up at SHP I was not a bicyclist. Lord, I didn’t even own a bike. Truth be told, even after the journey I still won’t be winning any medals in the Tour de France, but the fact is that it was only partly about the cycling. Yes, we went to beautiful places. Yes, I got in great shape because of it. And yes, we biked A LOT and saw things we never would have been able to had we been in a car. But what I really got out of that trip was some of the best friends I’ll ever have. If you put 12, 15, or however many people together for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you will make friends. You’ll laugh together, you’ll cry together, and you will be the better for it. You will come away from this experience changed, and you’ll forever remember it as one of the few times in your life you truly had fun. Why should you go? Because there are beautiful places out there you didn’t even know existed. Because boring people don’t go on bike trips. And because there’s no good TV on in the summer anyway.” Lucy Mason, tripper |

Enjoy some local favorites, like freshly caught
lobster or wild blueberry muffi ns. Afternoons might mean a
swim in a warm inland lake or hidden cove. After tidal pools for
beautiful nautilus shells (maybe even a chilly dip in the ocean!),
enjoy roasted marshmallows in the evening. Your group will ferry
into Canada and cycle along the Nova Scotia shore (surprisingly
different from the Maine coastline), stopping along the way to try
Canadian candy bars and other tasty treats and learn to say "Eh?".
You'll cycle in valleys and on ridges, past apple orchards, and along meandering rivers. Your group will camp on the shores of the
Bay of Fundy, to see the highest tides in the world roll in over the sandbars, and on the shores of the ocean, to watch the sun rise
over the sea in a blaze of color. A great ferry ride back to Portland brings you to the end of this trip.
