A Thousand Miles
1000 great miles! Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia

Love to bike? Can't decide whether to bike in beautiful green Vermont, or through the valleys of the majestic White Mountains in New Hampshire, or along the inlets and coves of the Maine coast, or through the quaint fishing villages of Nova Scotia? Why not see it all! Four states and two Canadian provinces!

Your group will cycle 1000 miles, averaging 55 miles a day. Some days will be less, some a bit more - but you can plan on doing 50-60 miles a day. The biking is not extremely difficult or mountainous; there's just a lot of it! The terrain is generally moderate, with only a couple of harder days. Most of the route is the same as other SHP groups use - just going at a faster pace, cycling every day. Your group's biking goal is to reach 1000 miles somewhere near Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, before ferrying back to Maine for a victory dinner (most groups actually do about 1015 miles, stopping at the magic 1000 mile spot to write a victory message in chalk on the road - and to brag to anyone who happens to walk by).

You won't miss out on all the activities that make a bike trip so fun and special, either - there will still be time to swim, play frisbee, and roast marshmallows over the campfire. You can stop to pet a cow's velvety nose in Vermont, wade in cool mountain streams in New Hampshire, and swim in the ocean in Nova Scotia. Your group will eat lunch on a wharf in a picturesque fishing village in Maine, and beachcomb in tidal pools on the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia. You'll even get 3 ferry rides (from Campobello to Deer Isle, from St. John, New Brunswick to Digby, Nova Scotia, and from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to Portland, Maine. A very exciting trip!
